How do I prepare for a blood test?
1) Get ready the night before
Have the following documents ready:
- Your RAMQ card;
- Your signed prescription;
- Your payment method, if you have not already provided the required information (cheque, credit card, cash).
2) Double check if you need to fast
Usually, you must fast 12 hours before the blood test with no alcohol for 48 hours. Some tests may have other criteria (e.g. do not eat seafood 72 hours). All these criteria are clearly indicated on the doctor’s prescription form and our team will confirm with you when booking your appointment.
3) Double check if you need a urine test
If you need a urine test, do not urinate for 30 minutes before your appointment. Some urine tests have special instructions. If this is the case, our team will provide you with all of the information you need to know when booking your appointment.
4) Drink water
Even if you are fasting, it is advisable to drink water 30 minutes before your blood test (up to 2 glasses, or 500 mL). Drinking water facilitates blood flow and makes veins easier to find.
5) STAY CALM
Our professional and experienced nurses will guide you through the entire procedure and make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
6) Don’t be shy to speak up
If you tend to feel weak, or you have difficult veins, tell our nurses! They know what to do in these situations and will help you every step of the way.
